Katie Owens grew up in Cincinnati, OH enjoying school and having amazing teacher mentors—especially in art. She moved to Columbus after graduating from Bowling Green State University and was hired by Hilliard City Schools in 2001 teaching at Darby High School and transitioning to Bradley when it opened. She earned her Master’s degree from Ashland University early on in her career. She teaches drawing and photography classes. She now resides in Galloway with her 2 children and husband.
Sally Ruffing grew up in Bellevue, Ohio. Attended Ohio University where she received her BFA in Art Education and attended The Ohio State University where she received her master’s in administration. She taught her first six years in Washington Court House School District teaching 1-5 and High School Art. In 2001 she was hired by Hilliard City Schools where she started at Darby High School and then transitioned to Bradley to open the ceramics program. She teaches Ceramics Two, Three and Four is an advisor for National Art Honor Society and is Department Facilitator. She resides in Grove City with her husband and two sons.
Juliana Boiarski is an alumna of Hilliard Schools and The Ohio State University. Juliana’s parents founded an art camp for children the year before she was born, and so she grew up surrounded by art teachers and professional artists. She resides in Hilliard with her husband, Ian, and several pets. Outside of teaching Juliana loves to read, play board games, and create art in almost any form.
The Visual Arts
A variety of Ceramics classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. Design concepts and ceramic techniques are introduced and refined as students progress from hand-building methods for working with clay to throwing on the potter’s wheel and on to advanced glazing and firing techniques.
After establishing foundational skills in the medium, students gain the opportunity to choose their preferred construction methods. Advanced students are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions while they focus on personal expression and portfolio development.
A variety of Photography classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. All Photography students are required to provide their own cameras (instructors will specify camera model and/or type) and additional photographic supplies, so students and parents need to be aware that these courses can get expensive.
Photographic processes and composition skills are introduced and refined as students progress from capturing successful photos to utilizing the camera as a creative tool. After establishing foundational skills in the medium, students learn matting and mounting with a focus on portfolio development as they are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions.
A variety of Drawing classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. A range of drawing techniques are introduced and refined as students progress from predominately graphite works to charcoal, colored pencils and other media.
After establishing foundational skills in the medium, emphasis shifts to personal expression and technical mastery with a focus on portfolio development as students are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions.
A variety of Painting classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. A range of painting techniques are introduced and refined as students progress from watercolors and acrylics to other media.
After establishing foundational painting skills, emphasis shifts to personal expression and technical mastery with a focus on portfolio development as students are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions.
A variety of Sculpture classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. Sculpting methods such as addition, subtraction, and manipulation are introduced and refined as students explore a variety of media in the development of 3D design skills.
After establishing foundational skills, emphasis shifts to personal expression and technical mastery.
Students will be able to explore and apply skills learned in the Adobe suite. These courses are largely project based and have many opportunities to apply design skills and creativity.
Students will also have the opportunity to earn an industry recognized credential and grow their media arts portfolio.
