John Coltrane was an American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader who is considered one of the most influential figures in jazz and 20th century music. Coltrane was initially drawn to bebop and hard bop, but became a guiding force behind free jazz. His innovations, including exploring modal jazz and using unique scales and harmonies, opened up new possibilities for improvisation. His “Trane changes” also transformed how musicians approached chord progressions.
