BLACK HISTORY MONTH:
Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. As a young adult, he applied to his hometown law school at the University of Maryland, but was denied entrance because of being Black. He later sued the school and won. And before he became a judge, he was a successful attorney who, most famously, won the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case, which ended school segregation. BLACK HISTORY MONTH:

“It was a long time ago.

I have almost forgotten my dream.

But it was there then,

In front of me,

Bright like a sun,—

My dream.”

Langston Hughes (1901 – 1967) was a Black writer whose poems, columns, novels and plays made him a leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Check out his poem, “As I Grew Older” in the book, Poems About Emotions, by Clare Constant in the HMS Media Center. Destiny Discover also has the collections Black Culture and Black Heroes with books featured in the Media Center in celebration of Black History Month.
