SPORTS:

Boy’s Volleyball: Panthers closed out the regular season on Wednesday night at home. Blue lost 2-0, turning in a 10-6 record for the season. Much improved from the 3-10 last year. Black won 2-0, improving to 15-1 on the season. Black Team will play in the opening round of the OCC MS tournament this Saturday at Noon (UA Highschool).

Softball:  The 8th grade softball team lost 13-10 last night to Perry.  Rachel Mowell ripped a nice double and Kala Alspet continues to contribute with her batting skills.

Football: There will be a mandatory parent meeting for incoming Freshman Football parents on May 15th. The meeting will take place in the commons at Darby High School at 6:00 PM.

Genius Bar Applications Available for 2023-2024 School Year:  Attention all 7th graders: Would you like to work as a Genius Bar student for next year in the Media Center?  Applications are available in the Media Center by the Genius Bar information display.  This is a semester course that you can substitute for one of your electives.  The application form has information about the position/course. See Ms. Best with any questions.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month:  Since 1990, the U.S. government has designated the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. The month of May was chosen to mark the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869.  This month will recognize the experiences, achievements, and perspectives of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across U.S. history.   Check out the collection of books in Destiny Discover titled Asian American and Pacific Islander Month.

Congratulations to the Battle of the Books Team for their participation in this year’s competition.  Heritage’s teams did very well and made it to the finals but lost a hard-fought battle to Memorial. Their year-long dedication to reading and discussing books should be commended.  GREAT WORK!!

SPORTS:

Volleyball: Both Panthers teams beat UA Hastings on Monday night. Blue won 2-1 improving their record to 10-5. Black won 2-0 moving to 15-1 on the season. Final home game this Wednesday at 5. Blue plays first and black follows. Black team has earned the #1 seed for the OCC middle school tournament and will play the first round on Saturday.

Football:  Any seventh grader interested in playing football next year as an eighth grader please see Coach Martin in Room 167 to pick up your camp form

Arab American Heritage Month:  Check out the Collection titled Arab American Heritage Month in Destiny to see some of the books that are written about Arab American characters or by Arab American authors.  Some of the titles include: Once Upon An Eid by S. K. Ali and Aisha Saeed, Yusuf Azeem is Not a Hero by Saadia Faruqi, Unsettled by Reem Faruqi, Amina’s Voice by Hena Khan, and Escape from Aleppo by N. H. Senzai.
