Each three to five year old, suspected of delayed development, must be evaluated by a team of individuals to determine whether the child is eligible for our special needs’ preschool program. Eligibility criteria are established by the State of Ohio, Department of Special Services Education. Typically, the assessment includes measures of the child’s skills/abilities in the following areas:
Cognitive/adaptive behavior
Communication
Social – emotional
Motor (fine and gross)
Pre-academic
Hearing
Vision
The school psychologist, nurse, speech/language pathologist, occupational therapist, adapted physical education specialist, physical therapist, and preschool teacher are the individuals most involved with our preschoolers’ evaluations. Other professionals may participate when necessary. Assessment includes the use of tests designed for preschoolers, observations, a review of educational and or medical histories and parent interviews. This information parents provide our team is critical to the assessment process.
